Scuba Diving

The Basics Catalog Equipment

Lessons & Associations

Scuba certification requires classroom instruction and pool instruction using dive gear. The classes are organized in a number of different ways, weekends, after work, etc. You should be able to find a course that meets your schedule. Most dive shops provide dive instruction. They can be found in your local telephone directory.

You should find a friend to take the course with, that way you'll also have a dive buddy. After your pool and classroom work, you'll be given a written test, not too difficult. The final step to getting certified is your required certification dives. These are fun. You usually book a trip to the islands, Hawaii, the Caribbean, etc., and schedule your certification dives with a local dive shop. They're not all work. You'll go down to the bottom, demonstrate the skills you learned in the pool and then head off to investigate.

NAUI, PADI and the YMCA are the main certification organizations. NAUI and PADI are best know among the dive community. However, the YMCA is the oldest scuba training organization. Dive shop are usually associated with either NAUI or PADI.
