The Roxy Pro France Surf Tournament to be Held Sept 28 - Oct 8
Hossegor, France - Commencing tomorrow, the 26th of
September and boasting a waiting period right through until the 8th of
October, France's only World Championship Tournament (WCT) will bring
together the world's best surfers to do battle on the Basque and Landes
coasts. The top 46 men and 17 women on the ASP tour will be present at the
Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro France.
The top 17 women on the ASP world tour will contest the Roxy Pro France, the
penultimate event of their 2002 season. At stake is US$60,000 prizemoney,
with US$10,000 awarded to first place. Amongst the favorites are four-time
consecutive world champions Lisa Andersen (Aus) and reigning holder Layne
Beachley (Aus), current ratings leader Melanie Redman-Carr (Aus), and last
WCT winner in Portugal, Megan Abubo (Haw).
In order to guarantee the best surfers in the world get to compete on the
best possible waves France has to offer, Quiksilver has set up a logistical
operation of great proportions to allow the contest to be totally mobile
over four different sites. The main location will be established at
Hossegor, with annex sites at Seignosse, Capbreton, and the bay of Lafitenia
in St Jean de Luz. Every day a decision will be made as to which site
competition will be held at, pending quality of surf.
