National River Cleanup Week Seeks Volunteers

1/15/2002

Knoxville, Tenn.-Office furniture, televisions, lawn mowers, a 10-speed bike. These are just a few of the objects volunteers have retrieved from waterways during National River Cleanup Week, sponsored annually by America Outdoors, a trade association of U.S. outfitters and guides.

America Outdoors is now accepting registrations for the 2002 National River Cleanup Week, which will be May 11-18.

"This year we're really trying to increase community awareness about the quality of waterways," said Robin Brown, communication director for America Outdoors.

While National River Cleanup Week involves government agencies, paddlesports enthusiasts, outfitters and other local businesses, Brown said the greatest participation comes from grassroots community groups. "We would love to see greater participation from retailers," she said.

To register, contact America Outdoors at (865) 558-3595, or register online at http://www.americaoutdoors.org/nrcw.
