Head's New Intelligent Ski

1/25/2002

Head Electrifies 2002-03 Ski Line with 'Intellifibers'

Kitzbuehel, Austria-On the eve of the famous Hahnenkahm downhill ski race, Head introduced an electrifying new line of alpine skis.

Borrowing from technology used in its tennis rackets, Head introduced 11 ski models that use what it calls "intellifibers," which translate vibration into electrical currents. Head officials said the fibers improve the ski's torsional stability and help it adjust to different speeds, terrains, snow and slope conditions.

"You can't dope the skiers but you can dope the skis. That's what we did," said Johan Eliasch, president and chief executive officer of Head Sport AG.

Head also is introducing a microchip in one of its new skis next season, the Cyber i.C 300. The microchip amplifies the energy generated by the intellifibers and "fires" it back to the fibers for more control.

Eliasch said Head expects to sell about 200,000 pairs of these "intelligent skis" in 2002-03, thereby increasing its ski production, which last season was about 580,000 pairs.
